Pulicat - Huge Lake & Bird Sanctuary

Pulicat is a small seashore township that offers a revitalizing and exciting experience of expedition. This enthralling place situated on the barricade island of Sriharikota that serves as a divider of the Pulicat Lake from Bay of Bengal. This well known place is located at a distance of about 60 kilometers from Chennai and is at a distance of about 3 kilometers from Elavur. The town is esteemed as the second leading salt lagoon in India. It covers a total area of around 720 sq km of which 84 per cent comes in Andhra Pradesh and 16 per cent in Tamil Nadu. The Pulicat lake is sprawled over an area of 60 kilometers.

How to Reach

Pulicat lake is situated near Sullurupeta town on Nh3 at Bay of Bengal coast. Since it is a huge lake, it can be reached in many directions.

  • Distance From: Chennai to Pulicat lake - 60 km (south), Nellore to Pulicat lake - 100 km (north), Tirupati to Pulikat lake - 105 km (west)
  • Nearest Airport: Chennai, Tirupati
  • Nearest Bus Station: Sullurupeta (from north on Nh3), Pazhaverkadu or Pulicat (from South)
  • Nearest Railway Station: Sullurupeta (Vijayawada - Chennai main line)

    The Pulicat lake is sprawled over an area of 60 kilometers. From Sullurupet town (Andhra Pradesh) to Pulicat village (Tamil Nadu).

    There are three main approaches to Pulicat lake on visitors choice.

    1. Sullurupet → Pulicat Bird sanctuary (12km) → Sriharikota (10km)
    2. Chennai → Koyembedu → Redhills (19km) → Ponneri (20km) → Pulicat (19km)
    3. Sullurupeta → Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary (12km)

    1 & 3 are for Bird watching, amongst Nelapattu is very famous. 2 is for boating , Dutch cemeteries and fort. Pulicat village is the place where many private boats available to rent. Tada (AP), Arambakkam (TN) are the other places to hire boats to visit beatiful Islands in the lake.

Best Season & Time to Visit

Between November and February, when the migratory birds make Pulicat as their destination.

AP Tourism department conduct Flemingo festival on second week of January every year.

Things to Take Care

  • Once you get off the road, you don't get food and water. So carry enough
  • Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is open from 8am to 5pm
  • Add binocular and camera to your baggage
  • Birds watching is perfect in either dawn or dusk
  • Try going there in gangs as not much fellow visitors
