Ooty - The Hill Station

Ooty also known as Udhagamandalam is the Queen of hill stations. It is the capital of Nilgiris district and one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Nilgiris means Blue Mountains. It is a land of picturesque picnic spots which used to be popular summer and weekend getaway for the Britishers during the colonial days. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. It is favourite destination for movie shootings for Indian films. Most of the celebrities owns guest houses, estates in Ooty.

What to Eat

There are various restaurants in Ooty , mostly offering South Indian food, but some offer North Indian food. One can also obtain some Chinese food from restaurants such as Wang's kitchen, Shinkows and Western food such as pizza and sandwiches from chains like Hot Breads.

Ooty Toy Train Timetable

There’s only one toy train departure daily in Metupalaiyam & Coonoor. The train is scheduled to connect to the Nilgiri Express, which comes from Chennai.

  • MG Passenger train leaves Metupalaiyam at 07.10am, will reach Coonoor by 07.45am and Ooty by noon.
  • MG Passenger train leaves Ooty at 2 p.m. and will reach Metupalaiyam at 5.35 p.m.

During the peak summer time (April to June) an additional train service will be given by Nearest Railway dept. Sometimes disrupts train services due to Ooty receives high rainfall during monsoons.

Things to Take Care

Hill Train:

  • Do book in advance as it gets quite tough to score a ticket, especially in peak season.
  • Try to get a window seat for the best views and travel first class if you prefer nice wide windows.
  • Carry your own refreshments, as you wouldn't get any on the train.
