Kolleru Lake & Bird Sanctuary

Kolleru lake is undoubtedly one of the best fresh water lake and bird sanctuaries in India. It is located on the Kolleru Lake in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It is situated on the delta region between Krishna and Godavari rivers in Andhra Pradesh. It is a beautiful paradise for many migratory birds coming from Australia, Philippines, Egypt and Siberia during the winter season of India. This sanctuary is also known as Atapaka Bird Sanctuary and occupies an area of 308 square kilometres.

How to Reach

Kolleru lake is situated 15km near to Eluru town

  • Distance From: Hyderabad - 300 km, Visakhapatnam - 290 km, Vijayawada - 60 km
  • Nearest Airport: Vijayawada
  • Nearest Bus Station: Eluru
  • Nearest Railway Station: Eluru (Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada section of Howrah-Chennai main line)
  • Transport:

    Eluru town is on Nh3 and well connected by bus and Nearest Railway. From Eluru town take privatevehicle to reach Kolleru and Atapaka Bird sanctuary near Kaikaluru.

    The sanctuary is approachable from 3 sides of the lake by road, directly to the following places.

    1. Atapaka – 2.5 km from Kaikaluru town
    2. Bhujabalapatnam - 6 km from Kaikaluru town
    3. Gudivakalanka – 15 km from Eluru

    There are two main parts of the lake

    • Smaller lake: This is the place where Sanctuary is there and most tourists come to visit.
    • Bigger Lake: This part can be approached from Bhujabalapatnam. You can take a boat ride from here to reach the middle of the lake.

Best Season & Time to Visit

Sanctuary is open throughout the year. But the best time to visit the sanctuary is between October and March when the migratory birds make Kolleru their destination.
